James William Johnston

James William Johnston, influential lawyer in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and leader of the Conservative party there. Co-awardee of compensation for Mount Salus estate with his brothers-in-law William Bruce Almon and Mather Byles Almon and his brother Lewis Johnston, probably as executor of his brother John Johnston (all q.v.).

1. Born in Jamaica, 29/08/1792, the son of William Martin Johnston and his wife Elizabeth née Lichtestein. Educated in Scotland 1802-1808. He returned to Nova Scotia on the death of his father. Admitted to the Nova Scotia bar in 1813. Married Amelia Elizabeth Almon in 1821. Founding director of the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1832. Prominent Conservative politican. Died in Cheltenham, England, 21/11/1873.
