19th Feb 1781 - 2nd May 1846
Resident planter in the 1830s, builder of Villa Nova in St John in 1834, but dying in Cheltenham Q2 1846, brother of General Robert Haynes (q.v.). Married twice: (1) to Sarah Bell, daughter of Francis Bell (died 1808), the owner of the Belmont estate; (2) to Lucy (or Lucretia) Reed, daughter of George Reed (q.v.).
The will of Edmund Haynes of Saint Sidwell Devon whose will was proved 25/05/1846 was the same man. The will appears to make no direct reference to Barbados property but it does refer to his brother Robert Haynes, and includes legacies to a daughter of John Groscort Reed and to Ann Elvira Reed, widow of John Groscort Reed. This identification is reinforced by the details below.
There is a headstone in St Peter's Leckhampton (near Cheltenham): In memory of / Edmund Haynes, / Of the island of Barbados /Afterwards of the city of Exeter, England. / Born at Barbados, Feb. 19. 1781 / Died at Cheltenham, May 2. 1846. / And of / Lucretia Haynes, / His relict, fourth daughter / Of George Reed, esq. / Of Barbados and Dockfour, Demerara. / Born at Barbados, Nov. 19. 1797. / Died at Exeter May 24. 18[7]4. / Whose earthly remains repose together / Beneath this spot.
His widow Lucretia Haynes left £10,000 when she died of Colyford Villa Exeter in 1874.
