Biography

Angus Mackellar, son of Duncan Mackellar, farmer, minister of the Church of Scotland and later of the Free Church of Scotland, inherited a part-share of Hampden and Kerr estates in Jamaica through his wife Helen Stirling.

Married Helen Stirling of Keir, Pencaitland, Edinburgh, 17/08/1814. 1841 census: living in the Manse, Pencaitland, with son William MacKellar. 1851 census: a visitor at a hotel in New Bridge Street, Bridewell, London, with his son John MaKellar, where he gives his place of birth as Argyllshire (while his wife Helen MaKellar is at 8 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh with daughter Jane Ann MaKellar and four servants). Died 27/07/1859.

  2. Gravestone in Dean Cemetary, Edinburgh: Rev Angus MaKellar, age 78, buried in 1859; Helen Stirling (wife), age 76, buried in 1859; Jane Anne MaKellar (daughter), age 54, buried in 1875; John Archibald MaKellar (son), age 54, buried in 1877.

  3. Minister of Carmunnock, 1812-1814 and Pencaitland 1814-1843. Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (1840) and of the Free Church of Scotland (1852). "The late Dr. Angus Mackellar, minister before the Disruption of 1843, took an especial pride in keeping all about the manse and church in "tip-top" order, which no doubt his successors will keep up."

His entry in the  Fasti Ecclesiae: "ANGUS MAKELLAR, born Kilmichael Glassary, 22nd June 1780, son of Duncan M., farmer; educated at Univ. of Glasgow; licen. by Presb. of Glasgow 27th June 1810; ord. to Carinunnock 30th April 1812; pres. by Mr and Mrs Campbell of Shawfield, and adin. 29th June 1814; D.D. (Glasgow, 27th Feb. 1835); Moderator of the General Assembly 21st May 1840. Joined the Free Church 1843, but held no charge; Moderator of the Free Church Assembly 20th May 1852; died at Edinburgh, l0th May 1859. He marr. 31st Aug. 1814, Helen, born 14th Feb. 1783, eldest daugh. of William Stirling of Keir. She died about a month after her husband, and had issue-William, min. of the Free Church, Pencaitland, 1843-5, subsequently a min. and elder of the Church of Scotland, without any charge, born 29th Aug. 1816, died at Biarritz 5th Nov. 1896; John Archibald, born 26th Sept. 1817; Jane Ann, born 2nd Sept. 1820.
