Biography

Son of William Whitehorne Lawrence of Lawrence Park, Jamaica. Awarded a share in the compensation for a claim in St. Ann, Jamaica, with Elizabeth Ann Lawrence, Frances Gordon Lawrence and W. Whitehorn Lawrence (all q.v.).

  1. Born 30/06/1813 and baptised at Lawrence Park, St Ann, Jamaica, 24/03/1814, the son of William Whitehorne Lawrence. His father had died by 1833 when Lawrence Park was registered to the estate of William W. Lawrence. He was a publisher living at York Street, Covent Garden, London, son of William Whitehead [sic] Lawrence, deceased, when he married Anne Brodie Hall, daughter of John Hall, Gentleman, 11/02/1856. She was of 10 Guildford Street East, Wilmington Square, London, and neither of them had been married before. The witnesses were Frances Hamilton Lawrence and John Hall.

  2. Oswald and Anne were living at 3 Ann’s Terrace, London, in 1858 when their son Richard Gordon Lawrence was baptised at St John’s Church, Fulham. The death of Oswald Brodie Lawrence was registered Q1 1861 in Chertsey, Surrey.

  3. His mother-in-law Ann Hall was born in Jamaica, according to the 1871 census when she was living with her daughter Annie Lawrence age 40 and grandson Richard Lawrence age 14 at Crownpits, Godalming, Surrey. His wife’s occupations in the later censuses were “Keeper of Boarding House” (1891)

  4. Oswald Brodie Lawrence was the grandson or, more likely, the brother of Frances Gordon Lawrence, one of his co-claimants. He was perhaps named after Oswald Brodie (q.v.) who was awarded part of the compensation for enslaved persons on Lawrence Park.
