Biography
Owner of enslaved persons in Port Royal, Jamaica, left legacies in his will to his sisters Isabella Breakenridge and Mary Breakenridge and to his daughter Eliza Ann Cordiner (all q.v.).
- Baptised in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland, 10/02/1783, parents were John Breakenridge (died in 1800 age 49, a provision merchant) and Mary Breakenridge née Langwill (died in 1796 age 39). Brother of Isabella, Ann, Mary and Thomas Breakenridge (all q.v.). Deceased by 1834. Left legacies of £142 17s each to Isabella and Mary. Coffee planter, possibly married to Dorothy Hall, "a free Mustee"; certainly he had a daughter by her in 1816. His daughter Eliza Ann was residuary legatee to one-third of his estate. Assumed to be resident in Jamaica as Eliza Ann was born there in 1816, and his memorial inscription in Old Kilkerran Cemetary, Argyll, states he died in Jamaica in 1818 aged 35 years.
