Biography

Merchant and attorney of Kingston Jamaica, awardee on numerous claims.

  1. Will of James Brydon of 'Kingston, Surrey' proved 2/11/1840 is in fact the Jamaica merchant. He left monetary legacies totalling £4700 to some two dozen family members and godchildren mostly in Britain and a further £1575 currency to individuals in Jamaica. He left his wife property in Kingston, and an annuity of £360 currency p.a. He left his pen called Bull Park to his niece Margaret Brydon, daughter of his deceased brother Andrew Brydon. He said that he had been in partnership at Kingston with Andrew Scott in James Brydon & Co., and had brought his nephew John Brydon into a more recent partnership of Scott & Brydon: he left John Brydon £5000 currency from his account with the partnership, and woodland in Jamaica. He had, he said, one moiety with Joseph Gordon of the Cocoa Walk and Ultimatum plantations in St David, and he asked his trustees to give Gordon preference in the purchase of his [the testator's] interest. His residuary legatee was his brother John Brydon of Ochiltree in Scotland.
