Grandson of Major John Duer (d. 1765) and his wife Frances nee Frye. John Duer inherited Duers in Antigua from his father, also called John Duer (d. 1716). William's parents were George Rose (q.v.) and Theodora nee Duer. He is named in the indenture of 1829 as a co-owner of Little Duers when the estate was conveyed to Charles John Manning (q.v.).
MP for Christchurch, 1796-1800. Poet and translator. Friend of Sir Walter Scott.
