Slave-owner on Barbados, MP for Stockbridge (1754-1761) and for Wallingford (1761-1768). The son of Sir William Gibbons, 1st Bt. and Frances Hall. He married Martha Kenrick, daughter of Reverend Dr. Scawen Kenrick. Succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Gibbons, of Stanwell Place, Middlesex, Britain, May 1760 on the death of his father. Children of John Gibbons and Martha Kenrick included: Emily Gibbons; Sir William Gibbons, 3rd Bt. (1751-26 November 1814); Scawen Kenrick Gibbons (18 Aug 1755-1801); Robert Gibbons (1756-1805); and Reverend John Gibbons (described in the will of Sir John Gibbons as his second son, ?-1 May 1843). 1745-at least 1768, member of the Barbados Assembly. Appears to have ‘retained an active interest in island affairs when settled in England’.
