Sir John Gibbons 2nd Bart.

Slave-owner on Barbados, MP for Stockbridge (1754-1761) and for Wallingford (1761-1768). The son of Sir William Gibbons, 1st Bt. and Frances Hall. He married Martha Kenrick, daughter of Reverend Dr. Scawen Kenrick. Succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Gibbons, of Stanwell Place, Middlesex, Britain, May 1760 on the death of his father. Children of John Gibbons and Martha Kenrick included: Emily Gibbons; Sir William Gibbons, 3rd Bt. (1751-26 November 1814); Scawen Kenrick Gibbons (18 Aug 1755-1801); Robert Gibbons (1756-1805); and Reverend John Gibbons (described in the will of Sir John Gibbons as his second son, ?-1 May 1843). 1745-at least 1768, member of the Barbados Assembly. Appears to have ‘retained an active interest in island affairs when settled in England’.

1. Will of Sir John Gibbons of Stanwell Middx [made in 1772] proved 22/02/1777. He left his wife £100 p.a. from the Mullins estate until their children were all 21 or (if daughters) married. He left to his three daughters Fanny Elizabeth, Hannah and Martha enough money to make up to a total of £5000 sterling each the £3000 Barbados currency left to each of them in the will of their grandfather Sir William Gibbons bart. He left £4000 to his youngest son George Gibbons at 21, and a further £2000 to him that was charged on Mullins. Sir William Gibbons had also left £100 p.a. to each of his [Sir John's] children until 21, which Sir John confirmed. Sir John Gibbons had settled his English property under entail on his son William on the latter's marriage to Rebecca Watson in 1771, with reversion to his second son John and in turn to his [the testator's] younger sons. In the will he rehearsed an indenture of 1771 - the marriage settlement of his son William - whereby he had pledged an estate called Bishops to raise an annuity of £400 p.a. to William Buller and Joseph Pickering as trustees, which he shifted to the Morgan Lewis and Coopers Hill estates. It also identified the Haymans and Mullins estates as his. He left Hayman's, charged with £200 p.a. to his wife, to his son Scawen Kenrick, subject to the latter assigning £10,000 [left to Scawen Kenrick Gibbons under the will of Sir William Gibbons] to his [Scawen Kenrick's] brother Robert. He charged a further £100 p.a to his wife on Coopers Hill and Morgan Lewis, and £100 p.a charged on Mullins.
