Jane Lewis Jones (née Pownall)

29th Mar 1812 - 1892

Biography

  1. Born in Jamaica, 29/03/1812, the reputed daughter of James Corne Pownall by "free mulatto" Sarah Watt. Inherited a share in Silver Hill estate in St Andrew, Jamaica, in trust with her six siblings and six of her first cousins, on the death of his father in 1824. Her father's will stipulated that his daughters would forfeit their inheritance if any of them returned to Jamaica unless with husbands.

  2. Living at 2 Adelaide Villas, Clevedon, Somerset, in 1841, age 25, of independent means, with her sister Sarah age 20. Jane Lewis Pownall married Edward Chester Jones, a barrister, in Calne, Wiltshire, in 1846 (her elder brother lived in Calne). They had three children born in Islington and baptised at St Pancras Old Church: Chester (born 1848, baptised 1849), Edith Emily (born and baptised 1850, parents' abode given as Barmsbury Park) and Hubert (born 1852, baptised 1853). Hubert has not been traced after his birth and probably died young. In the censuses of 1851, 1861 and 1871 they were living at 32 Belitha Villas, Islington. A visitor in Woodford, Essex, in 1881 (her husband and eldest son were living at 13 Hilgrove Road, Hampstead). At 13 Belsize Road, Hampstead in 1891. Death of Jane L. Jones age 80 registered Q2 1892 at Hampstead.
