Son of David Thomson (q.v.) of Hanover Jamaica, and nephew and co-heir of Thomas Reid jun. (q.v.), also inheriting £1000 from his aunt 'Mrs Reid.' He was the namesake of his uncle, Samuel Wells Thomson (d. 1778), while his aunt had been a friend of James Boswell.
