Biography

Jasper Hall Livingston b. Jamaica 3/12/1780; d. 9/8/1835 Jamaica. Son of Philip Philip Livingston (q.v.). Married New York 1802 Eliza, dau. of Henry Brockholst and Catharine Keteltas Livingston. Eliza Livingston d. 1860 London. Daughters were Eliza and Catherine Louise (the latter married in England, to William Ward, 25/6/1832), sons Jasper (d. 1900) and Edwin.

  1. Eliza Livingston was in London from at least 1837 onwards. In 1851 she aged 65 born New York was living with the family of her son Jasper, a shipbroker aged 35 born in Jamaica, at 10 Stamford Hill. Will of Eliza Livingston late of Upper Clapton who died 25/10/1860 proved 08/12/1860, effects £300.

  2. In 1866, John Stuart Mill gave Jasper Hall Livingston as the name of one of the people unlawfully executed after Morant Bay. This Jasper Hall Livingston has not yet been traced.

Letter T71/1606 from Eliza Livingston received 8/11/1837 re St Mary no. 169: Jasper Hall Livingston was trustee under will of sister Catharine Saunders, who left all property to her nieces, his daughters; the slave in this claim was HER property. On death of Jasper Hall Livingston, trusteeship devolved upon his son Edwin Livingston, who was also exor, but his power of attorney was rejected by National Debt Office: anything else we can do apart from letters of administration, 'which are attended with great expense in a colony.'; 1851 census online; National Probate Calendar 1860.
