???? - 1846
Large-scale attorney and also a slave-owner in his own right. Father-in-law of Duncan Robertson of Gilnock (q.v.), whose first wife was Bridget Daly, and godfather of George William Gordon, the Jamaican National Hero executed after the Morant Bay rising. James Daly appears to have died in Jamaica c. 1846.
Administration of the will of James Daly planter [at present of Lambeth Lodge in the parish] of Lambeth Surrey [and late of the parishes of St Elizabeth and Manchester in Jamaica] [made 19/01/1837] granted 09/03/1847. He left his property in trust to secure an annuity of £200 p.a. to his wife Marianne and £100 p.a. each to his son, also James until 32, and his daughter, also named Marianne, until 21 and then 25. His residuary heir was his son James. The will had been proved in Jamaica in 1846, when he was shown as of St Elizabeth and Manchester, late of Lambeth.
James Daly was the subject of an allegation of cruelty by Elizabeth Hart, an enslaved woman, in 1832.
B.W. Higman, Plantation Jamaica p. 79. Higman shows Daly as attorney for two estates, a pen and two plantations in St Elizabeth [in 1832].
PROB 11/2052/91.
