Robert Lang

West India merchant, who died c. 1828 (his will was proved 29/04/1828), and husband of Maria Lang (q.v.). Charles Porcher Lang (q.v.) (who was Maria Lang's co-executor and co-devisee-in-trust) was their son.

  1. Robert Lang was a partner with George Baillie, Nathaniel Snell, John Turing and Lord Reay in George Baillie and Co. Charles Porcher Lang was a partner in Chauncy Lucas and Lang by 1830, but Robert Lang may have been a partner previously. Robert Lang was also a director of Imperial Life at his death.

  2. Maria Francklin, daughter of Gilbert Francklin [sic] Esqr was baptised 21/06/1777 in St Marylebone. She married Robert Lang Esqr of Finsbury Square 08/10/1795 in St Marylebone while still a minor, with the consent of her father Gilbert Francklyn. A Maria Lang of 9 Sussex Square Paddington aged 69 [i.e., born c. 1777] was buried at All Souls Kensal Green 26/12/1846. Will of Maria Lang widow of No. 7 Hyde Park Gardens Middlesex was proved 22/01/1847.

  3. Robert Lang appears as one of the founder members of the Roxburghe Club with dates of membership of 1812-1828.

  4. Will of Robert Lang of Portland Place Middlesex proved 19/04/1828. In the willl he rehearsed that trustees under his marriage settlement of 1795 held various sums now amounting to £21,486 5s 9d 3% consolidated bank annuities and a one-fifth share in £10,000 Jamaican as reversion in expectancy on the decease of Mrs Catherine Francklyn. He also delineated gifts of £2000-2500 he had made to his daughters on their marriages, and the £1000 he had spent on educating his son Arthur and equipping him for India. He left his one-fourth share in Canefields, his one-sixth share in Columbia and his one-sixth share in the Golden Fleece estate in Demerara and Essequebo in trust to his wife Maria, his son Charles Porcher Lang and to Charles Alfred Francklyn, to secure an annuity of £500 p.a. to his wife with the rest of the produce to be shared among his children. He left additional legacies to his daughters to bring each up to £5000.
