Hon. James Laing

???? - 1827

Biography

Husband of Mary Hagart, daughter of Patrick Hagart, Writer of the Signet, Edinburgh and later Factor for Lord Errol and Lord Dundas in Orkney. Married Kirkwall, Orkney, 06/07/1793, at least four children: Malcolm Jacques Laing (b.1802, Kirkwall), John Jacques Laing (b. 1804, Kingston, Jamaica), Barbara Blair Laing (b. 1805, Kingston Jamaica), and Mary. Probably a partner in Jaques & Laing, or Jacques, Laing & Ewing (with John Jacques and Humphrey Ewing Maclae, each of whom q.v.), to whom Goshen estate and pen were registered in the almanacs of 1811 and 1812, and probably the same man as James Laing given as attorney for several other estates in Jamaica. Philip Wright identified a James Laing (1765-1827), a Justice and Alderman of Kingston, later Custos, in his edition of Lady Nugent's Journal (2002), p.304, who is again probably the same man.

  1. The Hon. William James Coventry (1797-), a younger son of the 7th Earl of Coventry, married Mary, daughter of James Laing of Jamaica, in 1821.
