Biography

Merchant of Bristol, surviving partner in John Vaughan & Co. (q.v.).

  1. Philip, son of Rev. James Vaughan, born 05/10/1799 and baptised in Bristol, 12/11/1799. His parents James Vaughan and Sarah Protheroe (daughter of Philip Protheroe, q.v.) had married in Bristol in January of that year. James was the vicar of Wraxall from 1801 until his death in 1857. Probably the Philip Vaughan, son of James Vaughan, born in Bristol, who attended Harrow School and matriculated Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1815 age 16. Philip married Lucy Daniel (daughter of Thomas Daniel, q.v.) in Henbury, 03/06/1823.

  2. Philip Vaughan, age 40, merchant, was living at Redland Green, Westbury-upon-Trym, in the census of 1841, with Lucy (35), Lucy Ann (8), Susanna (6), Emily (4), one male and four female servants. Philip Vaughan, age 51, "Alderman of Bristol, Copper Smelter + Mer", was living at Redland, Westbury-upon-Trym, in 1851, with his wife Lucy, age 48, children James (25), Louisa M. (22), Philip H. (22), Lucy A. (18), Susan F. (16), Emily (14) and Edward (9), grandson James G. (1 month), a governess, a footman, a cook, a lady's maid, a housemaid, a nursing girl and a nurse. At the same address in 1861.

  3. Notice for creditors of Philip Vaughan late of Redland in the parish of Westbury-upon-Trym Bristol who died 14/04/1864 and whose will was proved 19/05/1864 by Rev. James Stuart Vaughan of Slapton Devon and Philip Henry Vaughan of Redland the executors. Philip Vaughan late of Redland left effects under £140,000.

  4. Philip Vaughan's son Rev. James Stuart Vaughan left £99762 4s 9d in 1899; another son, Philip Henry Vaughan, left £1,000,000 in 1917.
