One of the illegitimate children of Ann Whyte, "a free Sambo woman". With his mother and siblings, David owned enslaved people in St Thomas-in-the-East, although Robert Edmiston senior Esquire (presumably the children's father) held the life interest. Born 05/11/1802 and baptised at Windhill, St Thomas-in-the-East, 02/02/1813 with three of his siblings, "all children of colour".

Born into slavery in Carriacou, Grenada, Malvina Wells became a lady's maid in Edinburgh and a trusted family friend to her employers.
