Sir Henry William Martin of Lockynge, 2nd bart., son of Sir Henry Martin 1st bart., brother of Sir Thomas Byam Martin and brother-in-law of John Pollexfen Bastard, became heir to estates in Antigua following the death of his elder brother Samuel Henry Martin in 1782, these estates having been passed down from his grandfather Samuel Martin (1694/5-1776).
Author of A counter-appeal to "An Appeal" from William Wilberforce... (1823), a defence of the planters. His journal of his travels in the Caribbean in the 1830s is at the British Library.
Purchased manor of Wantage from John Bunn in 1825: bequeathed it to his son Sir Henry Martin who died without issue; the remainder to daughter Catherine Elizabeth May née Martin who sold the manor in 1868 to trustees on behalf of the Wantage Town Commissioners.
Parents Sir Henry Martin of Lockynge (1733-1794) (MP for Southampton 1830, Comptroller of the Navy 1790-94) and Elizabeth Ann Gillman née Parker of Kilbrook, co. Cork.
His grandfather Samuel Martin (1694/5-1776) was a planter in Antigua: "Martin might be regarded as Antigua's leading and most progressive planter in the 1730s." His brother was Admiral Sir Thomas Byam Martin, Comptroller of the Navy 1816-31 and MP for Plymouth 1818-32. His brother-in-law (husband of his sister Judith Anne Martin) was John Pollexfen Bastard (MP for Truro 1783-4 and Devon 1784-1816).
Married Catherine Powell 23/06/1792, Tottenham All Hallows.
Died 02/03/1842: "On Thursday night, the 3d inst., in Upper Harley-street, Sir Henry William Martin, Bart., aged 73." His obituary in the Annual Register reads, "FEBRUARY. 3. In Upper Harley-street, aged 63, Sir Henry William Martin, the second Bart. of Lockynge, co. Berks. (1791). He was born Dec. 20, 1768, the second but eldest surviving son of Sir Henry Martin, the first Baronet, Comptroller of the Navy, by Elizabeth, daughter of Harding Parker, of Kilbrook, co. Cork, esq., and widow of St. Leger Howard Gillman, of Gillmanville, co. Cork, esq. His youngest brother is Admiral Sir Thomas Byam Martin, G.C.B. and K.S., also sometimes Comptroller of the Navy. He succeeded to the Baronetcy on the death of his father, Aug. 1, 1794. He married June 23, 1792, Catharine, daughter of Thomas Powell, of the Chesants, near Tottenham, co. Middlesex, esq., and had issue."
His son Sir Henry Martin 3rd bart. left effects of £35,000 at death in 1863.
