Kathleen Mary Butler, The Economics of Emancipation: Jamaica and Barbados 1823-1843 (Chapel Hill and London, University of North Carolina Press, 1995) p. 85 [gives comp as £2694 for Barrys] ref to CO 28/116 Prescod to commissioners 18/12/1835. [It's item # 481, and is actually a letter to Colonial Office] 'As an extensive proprietor and claimant of a considerable amount of the Compensation voted by the Legislature to the West Indian Colonists, I shall be much obliged by your informing me whether the enclosed documents, and others of a similar nature, are sufficient to enable me to claim and receive my share of that Compensation....[and]when it is likely that I shall receive the amount. Permit me to add that my sole motive in seeking this latter information, is that my movements may be guided thereby.' Letter from Alstone [sp?] Lawn, near Cheltenham [Gloucestershire], Dec 18 1835.

Table showing 1223 apprentices on 6 estates [claim surely = slave #s 330, 94, 286, 231, 160,122], total value £67,045. 'It may not be amiss to remark that my interest in all the above, save in those of Barry, is a life interest - that my interest in Barry's is in fee - and that no counterclaim has been made in any instance.' Had received from his attorney in Barbadoes 'five other papers similar in form with the enclosed, but varying in particulars.'

T71/1593 p. 36: letter in reply, dated 05/01/1836, referring to the timing of the claims hearings.

T71/558 p. 108: enslaved persons were registered by John Glasgow Grant in 1834, as attorney to William Hinds Prescod.
