Rev. David Laing

Philanthropic

Governess's Benevolent Society Founder

1843 - ????

Re-founded, and funded through subscriptions, by Rev. David Laing in Harley Street c. 1843. Initially a philanthropic initiative, very quickly it took on an educational purpose and Queen's College evolved from it.

Notes

Re-founded in Harley Street and funded through subscription by Rev. David Laing c. 1843. The Governesses' Institute was damned with faint praise by Charlotte Bronte in 1848, Margaret Smith (ed.) Letters of Charlotte Bronte Vol. II 1848-1851 p. 67.
