Armchair, and its pair (V & A: W.18-1931), were sold by Sotheby's, 13 March 1931, lot 101, by order of the executors of the late Col. Abel Henry Smith, as part of the furnishings of Woodhall Park, Hertfordshire. Woodhall Park was built in 1778 by the architect Thomas Leverton (1743-1824) for Sir Thomas Rumbold (1736-1791). Col. Abel Henry Smith was the grandson of Abel Smith.
