James Barry merchant of Rye Sussex was awarded part of the compensation for a group of 19 enslaved people in Manchester Jamaica as only son and heir-at-law of Jane [sic] Barry the devisee under the will of John Barry the mortgagee. The counterclaim of James Barry by Duncan Robertson his attorney includes an indenture of November 1806 between John Green and John Barry by which a loan of £1600 by John Barry was secured by three bonds and by land in St Elizabeth and 12 enslaved people on it, and their increase. John Barry's will dated 10/05/1808 was recorded 02/05/1809: his residuary heir was his mother Jean [sic] Barry of England. Jean Barry had died intestate leaving James Barry as heir at law. The deaths of a Mary Jane Barry and a Jane Barry were recorded at Rye in 1822 and 1829 respectively.
