London merchant, awarded half the compensation for Shickles Pen in Clarendon as 'reversionary expectant on the death of Ann Shickles', into whose family he had married.
At Llangborne, John Gifford Esq. [marriage] to Elizabeth Amelia, dau[ghter] of J.H. Shickle, formerly of Jamaica. In 1851, John Gifford aged 43 [sic] Colonial Broker born Camberwell and Elizabeth A. Gifford aged 51 born Rickmansworth Herts were living at Ravensbury House, Mitcham Surrey. The Ravensbury estate was advertised for sale including the Manor House 'late in the occupation of John Gifford Esq., but now unoccupied' in 1855. Burial of John Gifford at Kingston 19/01/1855 aged 78. Will of John Gifford of Fairfield near Kingston proved 15/02/1855.
A John Gifford was in partnership with Frederick William Garrigues under the firm of John Gifford and Company of New Court St Swithin's Lane until its dissolution 22/02/1816.
T71/915 Clarendon 350A & B; T71/1606 letter 01/02/1836 from John Gifford 3 Cumberland Place Regents Park: I am coming to collect my award, and then you can tell me why it took so long: 'I as well as many claimants have a large mercantile establishment requiring my constant presence and I can very ill dispense with the time already consumed in my transit to and from your office.'
