1861 census shows Cornelius Paine aged 76 living in Brighton Sussex 'Retired from business' living with his wife Susanna aged 74 living at No. 9 Lewes Crescent; 1851 census identifies him at the same address as 'Retired colonial broker'. 1841 census shows him 'Independent' aged 55 at Islington. Death registered aged 84 at Brighton Q2 1869.

His son Cornelius (c. 1810-9/04/1890) also of 9 Lewes Crescent left £42,219 16s 4d (resworn to £42,319 16s 4d) when his will was proved 17/05/1890 by Cornelius Henry Paine of 4 York Gate Regents Park and Arthur Heintz Paine of 38 Canning Street Liverpool the sons and Henry Cornish executor.
