Slavery Abolition Act: Committee on the Slavery Abolition Act Amendment Bill House of Commons 06/04/1838
James Stewart moved the insertion of a clause for the total abolition of negro apprenticeship in Jamaica, to take effect on 1 January, 1839. The proposal was defeated. Among its opponents was Yates who declared that 'he considered our legislation had done more mischief to the cause of humanity, in the colonies, than anything besides. He had full confidence in the wisdom of the colonists themselves, who he had no doubt would adopt whatever measures the general interest required'. [This was the entirety of Yates's contributions on slavery and related questions.] |
