Claim Notes

Parliamentary Papers p. 318.

T71/885: claim by Benjamin James Hopkinson, as owner. Counterclaim from Eliz., Benj. and David Hopkinson, as holders of 1st mortgage on 3/8ths. Counterclaim from Thos. Hopkinson, for himself, and Wm. Chichester and John Grant, as executors of John Hopkinson, under a 1st mortgage of £12000. Counterclaim from Daniel Waterhouse, Alfred and Rogers Waterhouse, and Thomas Bouch, of Liverpool, under a lien of £17007.

T71/1593 p. 56: letter, dated 13/01/1836, to John Hopkinson, of 31 Cockspur Street, informing him of a counterclaim filed by Thos. Hopkinson.

T71/1610: letter from J. Hopkinson, 31 Cockspur St., stating: 'my father's executors were inclined to admit our counterclaim'. Letter, received 12/01/1836, asking if Wm. Chichester, John Grant and Thos. Hopkinson (my Guardians) have put in a counterclaim for compensation money coming to Benjamin James Hopkinson for Plantation Cove, which is under mortgage to us (my brothers and self), 'not having attained my majority at the time allotted for counterclaiming'.

T71/429 p. 115 (Slave Registers): appears to show B.J. Hopkinson registering, but is marked as 'pp' (or 'qq' - the Dutch version of 'attorney'). However, T71/429 p. 358 shows Benjamin James Hopkinson as registering 296 enslaved persons, as owner, on John Cove and Craig Miln in 1832.

T71/1593 p. 68: letter, dated 19/01/1836, to Thos. Hopkinson, 3 Cockspur Street, stating that the Court of Chancery has regard only to right of respective parties: 'they cannot enter into the question raised by you as to an anticipated charge of 10 per cent commission on the monies so received'.

T71/1256: affidavit setting out agreement - Benjamin James Hopkinson executed a power of attorney to John Grant, Wm. Chichester and Thomas Hopkinson, enabling them to receive the compensation money. Benj. David and Elizabeth Hopkinson withdrew their counterclaim.
