Biography

Trustee of the marriage settlement of Sir Francis Ford and Mary Anson (who was the sister of his son-in-law Thomas 1st Viscount Anson) and one of a group, alongside Sir George Anson, the Earl of Lichfield and the Rt Hon Anne Margaret Viscountess Anson, who lodged a counterclaim on Barbados claim no. 270 in this capacity..

'Coke of Norfolk'. Agricultural improver and MP. Firmly Whig and as such supporter of Whig schemes for Parliamentary reform for example and 'regarded as a staunch friend of the abolition of the slave trade' (Thorne, p. 479) while also being opposed, for instance, to the West India sugar planters on the question of distillation - that is the substitution of sugar and molasses for barley in distillation, a scheme proposed to help the West India planters in 1808 and again in 1811.

Created Earl of Leicester of Holkham and Viscount Coke on 12 August 1837, following Queen Victoria's accession.
