Biography

Executrix and widow of Rowland Maltby (q.v.), daughter of Thomas Pollok (1736-1801) and Susanna Palmer (?-1802).

  1. Baptised 02/08/1769 Grittleton, Wiltshire, her father was Thomas Pollok, vicar of Grittleton, Wiltshire, from the Pollok family of Craigton and Faside, near Glasgow, her mother was Susanna Mary Palmer, daughter of Charles [in fact Charlton] Palmer, a London attorney. Married Rowland Maltby in London, 26/12/1789.

  2. In 1841 Louisa Maltby is shown living in Charlotte Street, Independent aged 55 [sic], with Louisa Chiltern [?] Independent aged 20. Buried 10/12/1841, age 71 at Bunhill Fields Cemetery, London. Will of Louisa Maltby widow of St Marylebone Middlesex proved 30/12/1841. In the will she bequeathed various personal items; left £3500 in trust for the benefit of her brother-in-law William Maltby and then to be divided among her three nephews and niece, Charlton Lane, Russell Henry Manners and Susan Lane; and finally left a series of monetary legacies to family and friends totalling a further £4000 or so. Despite the reference to her husband as of Fitzroy Street in his probate record, the Charlotte Street in which Louisa Maltby lived appears to have been near Portland Place, rather than the extant Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia.

  3. There is a miniature portrait of Louisa Maltby (c. 1795) in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

  4. Her sister Catherine Pollok was married to, and later divorced, Russell Manners, MP for Grantham in 1806.
