8th May 1778 - 14th Jan 1870
Sainte Rose Modeste Aquart was born to Jean Modeste Exuper Eugénie Aquart and Jeanne Charlotte Marucheau in St. Lucia, 08/05/1798. He received his medical degree from the Faculté de Médecine at Montpellier in France in 1822. On 25/02/1840, he married Cecilia Lucia Olivere.
In 1834, together with his mother Jeanne Charlotte Aquart and his aunt Marie Catherine Marucheau, he was paid £1881 in compensation for 68 enslaved people.
He is described in various Grenada documents as a licensed practitioner in medicine and a resident of St. George, Grenada. He was in Grenada as early as 1833. He witnessed the will of one Alexander McDougall in 1852. Later in 1865 he was the executor for the will of Francis Antonio de Carla, late Roman Catholic Priest of the parish of Saint John. In 1858, he was appointed Medical Practitioner for the Town of St. George with secondary responsibilities as Medical Attendant for the Parish of St. George and Health Officer for the Port of St. George. He apparently relinquished the latter, which carried no salary. He retired in 1867 at the age of 69 and was appointed Consulting Surgeon to the Government for the remainder of his life.
He died 14/01/1870 at Halifax Street in St. George, Grenada. This was probably the home of his son Jules.
His will mentions his estate, Mon Plaisir, in the parish of Saint John. It was left in equal parts to his nephew, Louis, and nieces, Maria and Angelina. Everything else was left to his son, Jules. Provisions were also made for his illegitimate daughter, Amelia, and the children of his deceased daughters, Rose, Emma and Amelia.
