Biography

Resident merchant in Kingston Jamaica, partner with Thomas Legall Yates (q.v.). Counterclaimant for several estates in Jamaica as receiver in the case Commissioners of the Greenwich Hospital v. Willis (Brown Willis, as heir at law of John Willis, claimed to have the money paid to the Court of Chancery in relation to the case Pratt vs Willis). He appeared as owner of several estates in the 1840 Jamaica Almanac and 'J. Cockburn' was shown in the 1845 Jamaica Almanac for Lunna and New Ramble. To date, no will or death-date has been found for him.

  1. Sturge and Harvey described Williamsfield as 'a fine sugar estate, under the attorneyship of James Cockburn, a gentleman who bears a high character for humanity and respect to the legal rights of the apprentices' but also commented that '[t]heir attorney, who lives in Kingston, is good to them, but the overseer compeles them to watch... without any allowance.'
