Mrs Susannah Chalie (née Clarmont)

1736 - 1820

Biography

Daughter and heir of Matthew Clarmont, and co-owner, with her grandson Henry Skrine (q.v.), of an estate called Portici and the 112 enslaved people upon it in Grenada in 1817: their path to ownership is not yet clear, nor has the estate yet been identified further, but Matthew Clarmont described his brother Charles Clarmont as of the Grenadas in his [Matthew's] will of 1772, under which he left his daughter £25,000.

  1. Will of Susannah Chalie [formerly of Wimbledon...Surrey, afterwards of Bedford Square...since of Bathford Somerset, subsequently of Rochester Kent and lately residing at Anteuil and now] at St Cloud Kingdom of France, widow proved 12/04/1821. Under the will she left £5000 to her grandson Henry Skrine of Warleigh in the parish of Bathford Somerset as a token of her affection and asked him not to take amiss her use of a trust will, which was designed to relieve him of trouble given such a large addition to his property. She left £105 and an annuity of £150 p.a. to her dear friend Jane Lawrence then residing with her. She left £100 each to three women in and around Bloomsbury and to one man of Old Broad Street, and £4000 to her brother-in-law Matthew Chalie of Mincing Lane. After further monetary legacies and the bequest of her carriage and other property in Paris to her kinsman John Charles Claremont, she left the remainder of her property in trust to Henry Skrine. The will appears to be silent on slave-property in Grenada.
