James Lawrence of Fairfield

Biography

Son of John Lawrence of Ironshore and Running Gut (d. 1736) and Susanna, daughter of John Petgrave. "Of Fairfield", St James, which was owned by his eldest surviving son Richard James Lawrence from at least 1809. Member of Assembly in 1754, Custos, buried 16/06/1756 in Kingston. Will dated 1746, proved 1756.

James Lawrence was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 4153 acres of land in St James.

James Lawrence of St James, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1757. Slave-ownership at probate: 508 of whom 294 were listed as male and 214 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £30,999.7 Jamaican currency of which £18,236.06 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £6,721.53 currency debts and £0 currency plate.
