Biography

Partner with John Vaughan and John Longmore (each of whom q.v.) in a Bristol West India merchant house.

  1. Will of John Maxse merchant of [Arnos Vale] Brislington Somerset proved 10/12/1806. Under the will he left an annuity of £2400 p.a. to his wife Charlotte, and '£500 only' to his daughter Anna Maria Vaughan, 'having already amply provided for her on her late marriage to John Vaughan Esq.' He left his daughter Charlotte £2000 and an annuity of £400 p.a., and further annuities to his brother Charles of £50 p.a., a niece of £100 p.a. [both revoked in a codicil] and two servants of £20 p.a. each. His residuary legatee was his only son James Maxse. His specific legacies to James Maxse included his shares in the Bristol Theatre and the Bristol Library and three shares in the Kennett and Avon Canal. His executors included his partner John Longmore, and he later added his son-in-law and partner John Vaughan.

  2. James Maxse the son left £300,000 in 1864. Two of James Maxse's sons with Caroline Fitzhardinge Berkeley and three of their grandchildren have entries in the ODNB: Frederick Augustus Maxse as 'naval officer and radical'; Sir Henry Berkeley Fitzhardinge Maxse as 'colonial governor'; Sir Frederic Ivor Maxse as 'army officer'; Leopold James Maxse as 'journalist and political activist'; and Violet George Milner [nee Maxse] as 'imperial activist.' The last three were children of Frederick Augustus Maxse.
