Biography

John Hibbert of Bray Wick, Berkshire.

  1. Son of John Hibbert (1732-1769) and his wife Janet Gordon. Born 03/05/1768 and baptised 10/06/1768 at St Ann's, Manchester. At Eton 1779, King's College Cambridge 1786-1791, died 11/09/1855 and buried at Highgate Cemetery. Married Charlotte, daughter of Thomas Sumpter of Histon House in Cambridgeshire, 02/04/1800.

  2. Trustee for Agualta Vale Estate and Pen in St Mary, Jamaica, named in the will of his brother Thomas Hibbert (1761-1807). The property was in trust for the use of Thomas Hibbert (1795-1845) in tail for heirs male.

  3. Living at 47 Great Ormond Street, London, in the censuses of 1841 and 1851. Of 47 Great Ormond Street, age 87, in his burial record 15/09/1855.

  4. John Hibbert and John Hibbert junior, of 47 Great Ormond Street both resigned as directors of the London and South Western Railway in 1847. John Hibbert junior was evidently re-elected: "The proprietors have also to regret the resignation of Mr Hibbert, whose punctual attendance to his duties and zealous devotion of his mind and influence, from the first formation of this Company [in 1838] till the recent decline in his health, it is impossible for his colleagues to pass over in silence. In proposing his son, Mr John Hibbert, as his successor, the directors are assured that their recommendation will meet with the ready acquiescence of the proprietors."
