Richard Bainbridge

Biography

  1. Son of Thomas Bainbridge junior of St Ann, Jamaica, and Grace Bolt (both q.v.). Baptised 08/05/1800 in St Ann, a "mustee child" (only his father is named in his baptism record. Bequeathed £3,000 in the will of his father. Described as a doctor of medicine in Runcorn, Cheshire, when his father's will was proved in 1826.

From The Scots Magazine in 1822: "After the examination of the Herbaria collected in the King's Park, by the Botanical Pupils at the University this season, in competition for the prize medal, the sealed package, marked by the same motto as that to which it had been adjudged, was opened in the presence of the class, on Friday last, and the collector found to be Mr. Richard Bainbridge, from Jamaica. The collection was extensive, the species correctly arranged and neatly put up, showing that Mr. Bainbridge had entered upon the study of Botany with zeal, and prosecuted it with success." Richard Bainbridge of Jamaica graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1824.

  3. Administration of the will of Richard Bainbridge MD of Runcorn Cheshire [made in November 1831] was granted 21/06/1832. Int he will he left all his property in Jamaica to his sister Eliza, then also living at Runcorn, who he asked to take care and provide for his servant George ('a black)', and who he said must receive his moneys held at Higgin Whitetley in London.
