William Nott

???? - 1816

Biography

Owner of Caenwood in Trelawny, Jamaica. Deceased by 1817. Two of the trustees of his will were Hopewell Tyler and William Fairclough.

  1. William Nott, "a white man", had three children with Charlotte Hall, "free mulatto", baptised in Trelawny: William Alexander (baptised 1798), Wilmot Elizabeth (born and baptised 1798) and Sarah Ann (baptised 1802 aged 8 years). Two more children of William Nott, both given as "free mulatto", were baptised in Trelawny on the same day as Sarah Ann: John (aged 21 years) and Thomas (age 22 years); their mother was Jane Crawford.

  2. 75 enslaved people were listed in the Jamaica Almanac of 1811 (based on the givings-in tax returns of 1809) to "Nott & Kroger". Given William Nott's later ownership of Caenwood in Trelawny this suggests he was in an earlier partnership for the ownership of the estate. "Kroger" may be the Gunter Henry Kroger of Martha Brae, Jamaica, planter, son of Gunter Henry Kroger (a sugar refiner in Bristol) who died in 1808 in the 40th year of his age.

  3. William Nott, millwright, aged 60 years, was buried in Trelawny, 23/06/1816.

  4. Between 1823 and 1826, Sarah Ann Nott acquired five enslaved people previously in the possession of her guardian Hopewell Tyler.
