Robert Dallas

???? - 1769

Robert Dallas MD is shown as the owner of Dallas Castle and as the father of Robert Charles Dallas (q.v.) in the ODNB entry for the latter. Genealogical sources consistently link the owner of Dallas Castle to the Robert Dallas who died in London in 1769, and show his grandson as George Mifflin Dallas, after whom the city of Dallas was named.

  1. Robert Dallas owned 900 acres and 91 enslaved people in St Andrew, Jamaica, in 1753. This is assumed to be Dallas Castle, now in Port Royal.

  2. Robert Dallas was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 30 acres of land in St Andrew, 245 acres in St Thomas-in-the-East and 470 acres in St George, total 745 acres.

  3. Will of Robert Dallas [late of the island of Jamaica but now] of the parish of St John the Evangelist Westminster proved 20/12/1769. In the will, made in the same year, after £500 to his niece and £20 each for mourning to some younger relatives, he left his entire estate to his wife Sarah, also an executrix with Samuel Jackson of Jamaica and the latter's brother John Jackson of Lime Street. The will makes no mention either of children or of property in Jamaica, but an executor for Samuel Jackson appears as a trustee of Dallas Castle.
