Biography

Henry Fanning was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 410 acres of land in St James.

Henry Fanning of St Catherine, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1748. Slave-ownership at probate: 72 of whom 53 were listed as male and 19 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £6085.94 Jamaican currency of which £3738.25 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £1806.25 currency debts and £64.52 currency plate.

Assumed to be the Henry Fanning who married Rosa Kelly in 1747 and died shortly after. This is the man who purchased the land later to be named Rose Hall. Note that Rosa Kelly appears in the Quit Rent books as well under the name Rosa Ash (after marrying her second husband George Ash).
