Biography

  1. Archibald Dick, son of Hugh Dick, merchant, and Cathrin Somerville at S Hichbath[?], born 18/09/1777 and baptised 22/10/1777 in Glasgow. He was the brother of James Dick merchant of Kingston (q.v.).

  2. ”At Mountgerald, Ross-shire, the 13th current, Archibald Dick, Esq. of Windsor Castle, Jamaica, and a member of the Honourable Assembly of that island, to Isabella, third daughter of the Iate Colin Mackenzie, Esq. of Mountgerald. Archibald Dick of Windsor Castle St David's Jamaica and his wife Isabella Mackenzie now residing at Mountgerald had a son Hugh Sommerville in 1831.

  3. Archibald Dick and Isabella Mackenzie had five children baptised in Resolis or Kiltearn, Cromarty: Hugh Sommerville (1831), Colin Mackenzie (1832), Archibald (1834), Simon Mackenzie (1838) and Alexander (1839). The later censuses reveal a daughter as well, Emily M., born c. 1836 in Resolis.

  4. In 1851 Archibald Dick was living at Friar's Park, Elgin, age 73, West India Proprietor, born Glasgow, with his wife Isabella age 50 and four children all born in Roselis[?], Cromarty: Emily M. (15), Hugh S. (20), Archibald (16), Alexander (12). One of the two female servants, Fanny Anderson, age 45, had been born in Jamaica. He was at the same address in 1861, age 83, Proprietor of Houses, with his wife and eldest daughter (Born Resolis, Cromartyshire), Frances Anderson (age 51, house servant, born Jamaica) and one other female servant. Archibald Dick has not been found in the census of 1841: Isabella was living in Elgin with the children Hugh (10), Colin (9), Archibald (6), Emilia (5), Simon (3), Alexander (2).

  5. Archibald Dick, West India Planter, married to Isabella McKenzie, died 01/08/1864 at 29 Melville Street, Edinburgh, age 86 years.

These names correspond to the siblings Alexander, David, Archibald, Janet, Elizabeth, Catherine and John named in the will of James Dick merchant of Kingston (q.v.), confirming he was the brother of this Archibald Dick.
