1810 - 1879
Son of George Henry Burt, planter, educated England, Notary Public St Kitts/Anguilla 1835. Visited England 1845, 1860 appointed Civil Commissioner West Australia, Chief Justice of Supreme Court 1861. c 1873 returned to West Indies to try to rescue sugar estates of his early partnership with Francis Spencer Wigley (q.v.).
Archibald Paull Burt has an entry in the ODNB as colonial judge. The entry says that he owned three enslaved people at the time of abolition: Sarah, a washerwoman aged 40; John, a house servant aged 12; and a one year old baby. It makes no mention of the other enslaved people held by his 'trading partnership' with Francis Spencer Wigley.
A detailed biography, covering the Burt family's history in the Caribbean as well as A. P. Burt's life in Western Australia, is by Jane Lydon and Xavier Reader in People Australia.
