Biography

Awarded the compensation for Buttalls estate in Barbados, but possibly in Britain by the mid-1820s and dying there in 1875. Owned Buttalls in her own right: her husband Allen Dalzell (q.v.) held a mortgage over the estate.

  1. 1851 Mary Dalzell, visitor, widow, age 63, fundholder, was a visitor at 2 Down Place, Ilfracombe, Devon, at the home of her son-in-law William Savery and his family. However, Mary Elizabeth Dalzell was likely already living in Cheltenham as her daughter was of Cheltenham when she married William Tanzie Savary in 1850. In 1861 Mary H. [sic] Dalyell [sic], widow, age 72, born West Indies, was living at 11 Hatherley Place, Cheltenham, with her widowed daughter Mary E. Savory, three grandchildren, four female servants and two visitors (Hugh H. Jones, Archdeacon of Demerara and his wife Mary E. Jones). In 1871 Mary E Dalzell aged 82 born West Indies British Subject was living at Tivoli Lawn, Cheltenham with her daughter Mary E. Savary aged 53 born North America.

  2. Will of Mary Elizabeth Dalzell who died at Cheltenham 17/04/1875 proved 26/05/1875 (by Mary E Savary among others), effects under £4,000. Mary E. Savary was born in British Guiana.

  3. Mary Elizabeth Dalzell was buried in the churchyard of St Peter's, Leckhampton, in Plot L.149. The inscription reads: MARY ELIZABETH DALZELL. WIDOW OF ALLEN DALZELL ESQRE / DIED APRIL 17TH 1875 IN HER 87TH YEAR. / SHE OPENED HER MOUTH WITH WISDOM. IN HER TONGUE THE LAW OF KINDNESS / HER CHILDREN ARISE UP AND CALL HER BLESSED. A WOMAN THAT FEARETH THE LORD SHE SHALL BE PRAISED.
