1801 - 8th May 1870
Husband of Sophia Lucy Marriott (q.v.), co-heiress of her father Ellis or Ellys Anderson Stephens (q.v), and one of three (possibly four) daughters and their husbands who appear as remaindermen in a series of awards in Barbados, the largest concerning the Byde Mill estate for which an agent, Joseph Warner Bromley, received the compensation on behalf of all the trustees involved. Her sisters were Maria Charlotte Sperling and Frances Layton (both of whom q.v.).
The marriage settlement of Richard Marriott of Abbotts Hall and Sophia Lucy Stephens dated 04/05/ May 1829 included a share in Byde Mill and in land in Essex.
In 1841 Sophia Lucy Marriott aged 35 was living at Abbotts Hall Shalford Essex with husband Richard and children Julia 11, Emmeline 7, Humphrey 10 and Laura nine months. In 1851 Sarah [sic] L. Marriott aged 49 born Bampstead [?] Essex was living at Abbotts Hall with Richard Marriott aged 50 Gentleman Landed Proprietor with daughters Julia 21, Laura 11 and Augusta 9. In 1861 Sophia Lucy Marriott aged 60 born Clifton was living at Abbotts Hall living with Richard and children Humphrey 28 Captain in militia and Emmeline 26. J. & R. Marriott bought Abbot's Hall in 1790 and the present house was built in 1823.
T71/895 Barbados claim no. 555B. T71/898 Barbados claim nos. 3601B, 3777 (Byde Mill) and 3779B. T71/899 Barbados claim no. 4293B. Ellys Anderson Stephens refers to 'four daughters' in acknowledging the counterclaim: the fourth party to the awards apears ot have been Charles Walton and his wife.
