John Pownall

Claimant or beneficiary

John Pownall was awarded part of the compensation for the enslaved people on the Whitehall estate with William Linwood (q.v.). The capacity in which the two men were awarded compensation is not entirely clear, but Linwood was a trustee of the marriage settlement, and also described as the assignee, of Rev. Edward Collins Wright (q.v.) whose father-in-law had owned the estate. This John Pownall was probably acting in a trustee role and was again probably but not certainly the John Pownall 'late of the Six Clerks Office Chancery Lane' whose (short and uninformative) will was proved 30/06/1843.

PROB 11/1981/213. He left £100 each to his sisters and bother George, who was residuary legatee.
