Biography

Son of John Forster Alleyne (1762-1823) and Elizabeth Gibbes Willing (sometimes given as Welling).

  1. Baptised in St James, Barbados, in 1798. Inherited Porters and Mt Standfast from his father c. 1820 when the estates were valued at £44,264.

  2. Married Margaret Frances Bruce, daughter of Sarah Austin, sister of the politician Henry Austin Bruce 1st baron Aberdare and grand-daughter of Hugh Williams Austin. They married in Aberdare, Glamorganshire, in 1835 - Charles Thomas Alleyne was "of St James in the Island of Barbados, Bachelor" and Margaret Frances Bruce was "of this parish". Their daughter Sarah Frances was born and baptised in St James, Barbados, in 1836, when Charles's occupation was given as planter. The family was in Bristol by 1839 when Charles Bruce Knight Alleyne was baptised at Clifton. In 1841 Charles T. Alleyne, age 40, of independent means, was living at 2 Litfield Place, Clifton, with Margaret F., age 30, Sarah F., age 4, Charles B. K, age 2, six female servants, one male servant, one young clerk and his wife. There was also a coachman listed as resident in the stable of 2 Litfield Place. The family were at the same address in the census of 1861.

  3. Death of Charles Thomas Alleyne aged 73 registered Clifton Q2 1872. Will proved 21/08/1872. 4th codicil to the will of Charles Thomas Alleyne late of Clifton and of Porters in the parish of St James Barbadoes who died 15/04/1872 at Litfield Place Clifton proved by Rev. John Forster Alleyne (brother), Thomas Daniel Hill of Mincing lane and Forster McGeachy Alleyne of Lincolns Inn the son, 3 of the executors 1875.  Effects under £30,000, double probate granted at Bristol December 1878.

  4. Alleyne's youngest daughter Leonora Blanche was the collaborator of her husband, the editor and writer Andrew Lang (31 March 1844 – 20 July 1912), Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, anthropologist and student and collector of folk and fairy tales, classicist, and historian.
