Biography

Born Lucy Oliver, daughter of Thomas Oliver and widow of Henry Hope Tobin.

  1. Married Henry Hope Tobin at St. Augustine's, Bristol 22/11/1798. "1798 Nov. 22 Henry Hope Tobin of this Parish and Lucy Oliver of this Parish were married in this Church by Licence this 22 Nov. 1798 in the presence of Thomas Oliver, Fanny Tobin, Elizabeth Tobin." Will of Lucy Tobin widow of No. 3 Vyvyan Terrace Clifton Gloucs., proved 04/02/1857. Henry Hope Tobin was the son of James Tobin (1736/7-1817) and Elizabeth Webbe, the daughter of the Nevis slave-owner George Webbe. James Tobin, 'a cultured man' according to the ODNB, was partner with John Pinney and himself a slave-owner on Nevis who engaged in a public contestation with James Ramsay over slavery in 1785. James Tobin's other sons included the naval officer George Tobin, the playwright John Tobin and James Webbe Tobin, described by the ODNB as 'a fervent critic of slavery and..an advocate for its abolition.'

  2. Lucy Tobin nee Oliver's father Thomas Oliver, the son of Robert Oliver and Ann, daughter of James Brown of Antigua, is in the ODNB as 'colonial official'.

  3. In 1841, Lucy Tobin age 60, born foreign parts, was living at 6 Harley Place, Clifton, with her sister Miss [Frances] Oliver, age 61, nephew Rev. Oliver Rogers, age 40, clergyman, born in county and niece Thomasin O. Haynes, age 20, of independent means, four female servants and two male servants.
