1786 - 18th Mar 1842
Bristol merchant, son and partner of Robert Claxton (q.v.). A commission of bankruptcy against him issued 11/12/1812 as surviving partner of Robert Claxton in Robert Claxton & Sons was superseded in January 1813.
Son of Robert Claxton of Bristol and his wife Rachel nee Mardenbrough.
Butler Thompson Claxton was one of the original joint owners of the 289 ton Lucy Anne which was built in Bristol in 1819. Other owners included Thomas Skryme Protheroe, John Harris, Thomas Protheroe and Thomas Wadley, merchants, Bristol; John Lavicourt [sic] Anderdon, merchant, and Adolphus Pugh Johnson, insurance broker, London. On 23 Aug. 1820, B. T. Claxton sold three-eighths to Charles Franks, banker, London. "The much-registered Lucy Anne was originally a WestIndiaman, but later made more varied voyages including a period as an American packet. .. She drops from the register between 1852 -1854."
His will states that he is of Nice, Sardinia. In it he refers to the suspension of payments by his mercantile house: his main asset was a £2000 policy with London Assurance from which he left monetary legacies to his family.
