1772 - 26th Aug 1838
James Sadler 'late of Jamaica, Gent:', son of William Sadler and his wife Hannah. Memorial inscription in Purton, Wiltshire gives his grandfather as John Sadler, gentleman, who died 24/09/1747 age 38 and grandmother as Hannah, wife of John, who died 12/07/1797 age 83. Details of his father William [see 5. below] are unclear in the image of the inscription but his mother's death was given as 26/12/1809 age 59. Also listed are his uncle John Sadler ('Planter in Jamaica', died 18/11/1798 age 54); his uncle James ('late of London', died 15/01/1811 age 69); his brother William ('late of London', died 10/01/1840 age 63); his brother Thomas (died 11/03/1852 age 66).
James Sadler of St Pancras, bachelor, married Lucy Kibblewhite of Gray's Inn, spinster, at St George the Martyr, Queen Square, Camden, 29/12/1818. James Sadler originally claimed compensation for enslaved people on Weyhill, St Mary, Jamaica, as owner-in-fee. The compensation was awarded to the trustees of his marriage settlement with Lucy Sadler by indenture for £10,000. The original parties to indenture were John Sheppard, Lucy Kibblewhite, William Kibblewhite (of Liddiard Millicent, Wiltshire, Lucy's father and since deceased), James Kibblewhite (of Gray's Inn Place) and George Kibblewhite (of Gray's Inn Place, since deceased); James Kibblewhite and George Kibblewhite were Lucy's brothers. John Sheppard was presumably a relation as James Sadler's grandmother Hannah's maiden surname was Sheppard.
James Sadler, late of Weyhill Plantation and of Highgate, London, died in Jamaica 26/08/1838 age 66.
James Sadler was listed against Weyhill in the Jamaica Almanacs from 1809.
William Sadler of Stoke in Purton, Wiltshire, left all his property in Jamaica to his eldest son James (will written and proved in 1817).
