Biography

Planter in Antigua, son of Samuel Martin (q.v.) and Grace Savage, husband of Elizabeth Martin née Kelso (q.v.), brother of George Savage Martin (q.v.). His widow was entitled to an annuity of £400 pa under a deed of 1816, three years after her marriage: her representatives thus claimed compensation for the enslaved on Nibb's Estate, Antigua. No will has yet been found for him but a record for John Halliday Martin 18/03/1826 shows his burial at Whittington in Worcestershire.

  1. Baptised 25/05/1782 at St Marylebone, Middlesex, son of Samuel Martin and Grace. Married Elizabeth Kelso in Edinburgh, 05/04/1813: "John Halliday Martin Esqr of St Andrew Parish, Eldest Son of Samuel Martin Esqr of the Island of Antigua, and Miss Elizabeth Kelso, Eldest daughter of Colonel William Kelso of Dankeith. Same Parish." There are three children born to this marriage in Penninghame, Wigtown, Scotland, but internet sites list (unsourced) a further four children born in the Caribbean.

  2. Attended Oxford University (Pembroke College), matriculated 07/11/1800 age 18.
