Robert Jefferson

Awarded compensation as mortgagee with his brother for two estates on Antigua belonging to the heirs of Sir William Ogilvy. Son of Henry Jefferson 'the elder' (1750-1827), brother of Henry Jefferson (1800-1877) (q.v.) and partner in Robert and Henry Jefferson (q.v.) of Whitehaven, West India and Wine and Spirits Merchants.

1. Henry Jefferson (1750-1827) was 'of Antigua, later of Whitehaven', and had married Anne Tweedie at St John's in 1780.

2. Robert Jefferson, age 26, married Elizabeth Brown age 23 at the Chapel of St James in Whitehaven in 1813. In 1841 he was living at Springfield, Egremont, age 55, merchant, born in county, with his wife Elizabeth and children Mary (age 20), Henry (age 17), Ann (age 14) and Elizabeth A. (age 10), a governess, two male servants and three female servants.

3. Deeds and papers relating to estates in Antigua c. 1830-1860 are held as part of the R. & H. Jefferson, wine and spirit merchants papers at Cumbria Archive and Local Studies Centre, Whitehaven.
