Henry Jefferson

Awarded compensation as mortgagee with his brother for two estates on Antigua belonging to the heirs of Sir William Ogilvy. Son of Henry Jefferson (1750-1827), brother of Robert Jefferson (q.v.) and partner in the Whitehaven West India and Wine & Spirits business of Robert and Henry Jefferson (q.v.).

1. Living at Hensingham House, Hensingham in 1841. Henry Jefferson, age 50, 'J.P. West India Merchant', born Whitehaven, was living at Rothersyke in 1851 with his wife Ann (age 52), daughters Ann (age 20) and Catherine (age 9), sons Charles (age 21) and Frank (age 13), and servants. At Rothersyke in 1871 with son Robert (44), daughters Jane (36), Harriett Tetley (34) and servants in 1871. Will of Henry Jefferson late of Rothersyke Cumberland who died at Whitehaven 19/07/1877 proved 08/08/1877 by Robert Jefferson merchant the son and Jane Jefferson spinster the daughter executors, effects under £25,000.

2. Henry Jefferson (1750-1827) was 'of Antigua, later of Whitehaven', and had married Anne Tweedie at St John's in 1780.

3. Deeds and papers relating to estates in Antigua c. 1830-1860 are held as part of the R. & H. Jefferson, wine and spirit merchants papers at Cumbria Archive and Local Studies Centre, Whitehaven.
