Biography

Awarded part of the compensation for the enslaved people on Gunthorpe on Antigua, with his sister-in-law Alicia Gunthorpe, as executors of Rev. W Gunthorpe.

  1. Son of William and Margaret Gunthorpe (q.v.), baptised 18/09/1788 at St Marylebone, brother of Rev. William Gunthorpe of Bath whose will was proved 13/04/1826. The William Gunthorpe of Antigua whose will was proved 14/12/1807 was their father.

  2. In 1841 James Gunthorpe aged 50 'Ind' born in parish was living at Edwards Street with Alicia Gunthorpe aged 50 and 5 younger Gunthorpes (William, Isabella, Louisa, Janetta and Caroline) together with 4 servants and family members of one of the servants. In 1851 he was living unmarried at 28 Connaught Terrace, fundholder aged 62 born Marylebone as head of household with the Palmer family (described as nephew and niece).

  3. Will of James Gunthorpe of 28 Connaught Terrace late Lieutenant Colonel in Her Majesty's Army proved 22/6/1854. Lieut. Colonel James Gunthorpe of 28 [20?] Connaught Terrace Edgware Road, Paddington buried 1/8/1853 aged 65 at All Souls Kensal Green. Letters of Administration were granted to his nephew's widow in 1864, effects £2000. Brevet Major James Gunthorpe of the 1st or Grenadier or Foot Guards, Captain and Lieutenant Colonel by purchase 1822.

  4. Gunthorpe's was sold by West India Encumbered Estates Court for £2000 to Francis Shand in 1865.
